1) Explore high-quality, open, ocean data and tools to support your marine science
Register for the workshop with your conference registration. You can add the workshop after your registration following the instructions on the webpage.
Time: 9:00AM - 4:30PM
Venue: Latrobe Ballroom, Sofitel MelbourneAustralia's Integrated Marine Observing System (IMOS) was established in 2006 under the National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS) to produce sustained open-access ocean observations to support Australian marine science, industry operations, and decision making. Over the past 18 years, IMOS has enabled the collection and delivery of over 1 billion measurements of the marine estate, from polar regions to the tropics, including 27 Essential Ocean Variables and 21 Essential Climate Variables, critical to the study of marine ecosystems, weather patterns, and climate dynamics.
Through a combination of presentations and guided tutorials, this workshop will introduce attendees to the breadth of ocean datasets delivered freely via the IMOS Australian Ocean Data Network (AODN) and enable a two-way dialogue between IMOS and end users. Attendees will explore the new AODN ocean data portal, novel cloud-optimised ocean datasets for data science applications, and a suite of tools, data products and resources available to help access, visualise, manipulate and integrate IMOS data with their research datasets.
Convenors:
Fabrice Jaine, Natalia Ribeiro, Rebecca Zitoun, Benedicte Pasquer, Mark Rehbein2) Demystifying Academic Publishing
Time: 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM
Venue: Storey Hall, RMIT University Building 16, 336/348 Swanston Street, MelbourneTarget Audience: Early career researchers and ocean professionals interested in academic publishing.
Workshop Overview:
Hosted by UN ECOP Node Australia and New Zealand, this capacity building initiative features CSIRO Publishing expertise to support early career professionals in the ocean sector.
For many authors, especially early-career researchers, the publishing process feels like a black box. Common questions arise: Where has my manuscript gone? Who is reviewing it? What role does the publisher actually play? These uncertainties become particularly daunting when you're simultaneously navigating thesis preparation and building foundational knowledge for your career.
This workshop lifts the veil on the publishing industry. We'll explore behind-the-scenes processes in scholarly publishing, examine the importance of science communication and peer review, and share insights that aren't always readily accessible. Whether you arrive with specific questions or simply curiosity to learn, this session will provide valuable guidance to help you engage more confidently with the publishing landscape.
What You'll Gain:
Understanding of manuscript review processes
Insights into publisher roles and responsibilities
Practical guidance for science communication
Knowledge of peer review systems
Confidence to navigate publishing decisions
First come, first served. Spaces are limited.

Enhancing Scientific Diving: Updates, Safety, and Community Engagement
Register for the workshop with your conference registration. You can add the workshop after your registration following the instructions on the webpage.
Time: 5:45PM - 7:45PM with a follow up Wednesday lunchtime session.
Venue: Grand Ballroom Sydney, Sofitel MelbourneAim: The aim of this workshop is to provide updates on scientific diving standards and safety practices, and to engage the community in discussions on regulatory frameworks and future improvements. By fostering knowledge sharing and collaboration, we aim to enhance the overall safety and effectiveness of scientific diving operations.
Workshop Overview: Building on the success of the 2024 workshop, "Addressing Growing Regulatory Challenges in Scientific Diving," this year's session aims to continue the conversation and provide crucial updates to the scientific diving community. The previous workshop focused on the regulatory landscape and its impact on scientific diving practices, highlighting the need for ongoing dialogue and adaptation. In this year's workshop, we will begin with a recap of the key points discussed in 2024, ensuring that new participants are brought up to speed and returning attendees can refresh their knowledge. We will then provide updates on the latest updates to the scientific diving standard and review the actions that have occurred out of the previous workshop: Dive Officer workshop and the start of the dive log and incident database discussions.
Guest presenters, including a regulator from WorkSafe Victoria, and a hyperbaric specialist, will share their expertise on Victorian regulations and diving safety, respectively. The session will conclude with a collaborative brainstorming segment during lunch time the next day, inviting participants to share their ideas on how the ANZSDA can better support the community and how your nominated organisational representatives can engage with you to receive your valuable feedback.
